Software Engineering

Ask an engineer who took the fork you are standing at.

Almost every hard decision in this domain is the same shape: two paths, both defensible, and no way to try one without giving up the other for a couple of years. Manager or IC. Product company or service company. Depth or breadth. The people who can help are the ones who chose recently, not the ones who chose in 2016.

  • Taking the manager track or staying an individual contributor
  • Two offers with very different equity structures
  • Being told you are ready for staff and not knowing what that means
Guides

The moves Engineering Guides get asked about most.

Every Guide is a working professional in Engineering, with their work history, a rate they set themselves, and every rated session on the profile. These are the conversations they have.

  • IC to Engineering Manager

The first six months feel like a demotion, because the output that used to be yours is now someone else's. Most people quit the track during that window rather than after it.

  • Service company to product company

The resume reads as years of experience and the interview treats it as none. The gap is in how the work gets described, not in the work.

  • Backend to platform

There is no job posting for the version of this you want. It is almost always an internal move first.

  • Guides in Engineering set their own rate and their own hours. Browse who is on, read a full profile, and pay only for the minutes you talk.

In their words

What people in Engineering actually ask.

Not topics. The questions people type, from the situations they arrive with.

  • They want me to move to EM. If I hate it in a year, can I go back?
  • Two offers: more cash at a service company, more equity at a Series B. How do I actually compare them?
  • I have been told I am ready for staff. Nobody will tell me what that means here.
  • Is it too late to switch from backend to platform at seven years in?
  • My last three interviews were all DSA. Is that still what the market wants?
Common moves

Three transitions, and what makes each one hard.

The difficulty is rarely where people expect it, which is most of why a conversation beats a search.

Questions

What Engineering Seekers ask before booking.

Start by treating the equity as worth nothing and see whether the decision changes. If it does, you need the strike price, the last round's valuation, the vesting schedule and the exercise window before it means anything. A Guide who has held both kinds can walk you through the arithmetic on your actual numbers.

Not reliably, and not early. In most Indian product companies senior IC and EM bands overlap heavily, and the divergence, when it comes, is further up than people expect. Ask someone who can see both ladders at a company your size.

It is a translation problem rather than a credibility one. The work is often harder than the label suggests and is almost always described in the wrong units. That is fixable in one session with someone who has made the same move.

Ask someone who has already been through it.
